What is your preference between TFT monitors as opposed to conventional monitors for creating themes.
This question is mainly for those who do a lot of graphics.

im not a hard core graphics person yet but so far, my crt beats my dads tft any day, especially the price. i got mine for $40, he got his for around $400 .

i prefer crt's cuz you can get the resolution all the way up to 1600X1200 and it still looks crispy clean.

My crts run at 75 and 85 hz respectively... no eye strain in the least...

Graphics CRT's are not Consumer class which is why they cost bit more...

meh, for $40, i would rather keep mine. if i got an lcd, i would sell it and build a computer AND get a crt for that money...

I'm in the process of buying a LaCie 22-inch CRT. In doing the research I discovered most extended warranties for CRT's were about $80.00. LCD's...up to $1400.00. This is for a 2 year warranty. Scary! Makes you wonder how long the average LCD lasts. A CRT may weigh in a 65+ pounds but it's like choosing between a tank and a Volkswagen. And in this case the tank has much better graphics and color quality.

and more durable.

i retired the trinny today.. for anyone who follows my rants, you'd find i was VERY attached to that monitor :/ you can't beat the color and brightness of a sony trinitron.

after some quick scouring online i decided i didn't have the funds or critical need to get another trinny, so i went down to staples and picked up a 19" true flat envision to be a big brother for the 17" envision i got a couple weeks ago. i have to say i'm very impressed. for 200$ and 100$ respectively, the monitors are very crisp and have wonderful color (after careful calibration) and are pretty bright. the 17" sits nicely at 75khz at 1280x960 and for that screen size, at that res, text is VERY easy to read and things just look wonderful. i almost didnt go back to the 19". on the 19, though its capable of the same khz at that res, 75khz at 1280 the pixels on the left side kind of split apart looking interlacey and making things distorted. so i drop to 70khz at 1280 and things look great. the trinny had 85khz at 1280 but what can you do, im satisfied. i'd definitly recommend these monitors. i'll tell you in a few years how well they hold up - but from color and brightness you can't beat this price. staples and comp usa carry them.. they seem to be the best consumer buy crts. and they even look nice

When I clicked on this thread, "Monitors - Your Thoughts" for some reason I was certain I was going to read about some type of Orwellian Big Brother type conspiracy...

At any rate, as a design engineer, I've found over the years that a decent monitor is worth it's weight in gold, and from what I've seen so far, nothing out there now could convince me to give up my ViewSonic P225f. Yes it takes up a lot of room, but so does my girlfriend, and the monitor doesn't complain as much.

Why should I limit myself? I'm eminently capable of demonstrating both characteristics -- occasionally in the same activity... As for my girlfriend, she claims to be very much into computers... but... but.. they're... [shudder] macintosh...

ShamlessDesign, whats you thoughts on Referb's?

I found two sites that sell recertified factory referb's at as low as half the price. Mostly these are leased displays which get serviced and then sold...

I could have picked up a referbed SGI Triniton 21 inch (Sony basically) or ViewSonic 22 inch p220f, Mitsubishi 21 inch Dimondscan or a NEC 22 inch for $299.00, but my wife through a hissy fit...

Hmmm, I'm surprised by the number of people in favour of CRTs. At work I have a dual monitor set up with both running at 1280 @85Hz (one trinitron and I'm not sure of the other) and they look fine. BUT, I've also used 17" LCD screens at a native resolution of 1600x1200 and that looked fantastic. Now if I could have a nice dual LCD setup at that size I'd swap the CRTs out in a flash.

Not the view of hard core graphics users (neither am I...not at work) we've also been deploying 1000's of new machines since last summer, swapping peoples 15/17" crts for new 15" LCDs and WITHOUT EXCEPTION, the users have commented on how much better the display is. They're just everyday Windows users working at 1024x768, but for everyone (who expressed an opinion) to be in favour of LCDs then there must be something in them.

Just as an aside - the reason we opted for LCDs is because we looked hard at the total cost of ownership, and CRTs tend to burn a lot more electricity...I wonder if people have factored that into their decision making when buying something that is cheaper up front? :-?
